This biodegradable origami-style paper boat is designed for a gentle and symbolic farewell. Please follow these guidelines carefully to ensure a respectful and smooth ceremony.
1. Preparing the Boat: Keel and Stability
- Inside the bottom of the boat, you will find a folded paper keel — a pocket designed to hold small stones. This keel provides stability and balance, especially when the boat is being placed on the water. It helps the boat stay upright and allows it to glide gently and beautifully as it begins its journey.
- Place 2–3 small stones inside the keel pocket. They should be snug enough to stay in place when lifting the boat, but not so large or sharp that they could tear the paper. A good size reference is about that of a wine cork or slightly smaller.
2. Filling the Boat with Ashes
- Place the boat on stable ground, and make sure it is supported from the sides or gently braced on both sides of the keel to prevent tipping while filling.
- Add the ashes gently, and distribute them evenly throughout the boat — including toward the front and back ends, not just in the center. Uneven weight distribution can cause the boat to become unstable, leading to tipping or immediate sinking upon release. Proper balance is essential for a smooth and dignified launch.
- Do not fill beyond the horizontal support threads (thin string or hemp twine) inside the boat. These threads mark the safe fill level to ensure proper buoyancy and stability.
3. Lifting and Releasing
- Once filled, lift the boat carefully with both hands, supporting it from underneath on either side of the keel.
- You may place a single flower on top of the ashes as a simple and meaningful farewell gesture.
Special Note on Flowing Water
If you are releasing the boat into a stream or river, please take extra care:
- Water near the shore often contains small whirlpools, backflow, or uneven currents that may push the boat toward rocks or the shoreline. This can lead to tipping or sinking.
- Guide the boat a few meters away from the shoreline before letting it drift freely. This can be done with a long stick or by carefully stepping into shallow water if it is safe to do so.
- Do not push the boat forcefully, as this may damage the paper or submerge the edges, allowing water to enter. Once the boat becomes soaked or submerged, it is usually not possible to retrieve or relaunch it.
- If you are unfamiliar with the water or conditions, do not take risks. Your safety comes first.
